What is a nebula simple definition

What is Nebula in Space – Nebula is a Latin word and nebula means cloud or mist. A nebula is made up of a huge cloud of dust and gas.

These gases are mainly hydrogen, helium and ionized gases. The nebula consists of approximately 74% hydrogen and 24% helium gas.

Nebulae are very large and range from 10 to 100 light-years across.

Some nebulae are formed from dust and gas ejected from the explosion of a dying star (planetary nebula), while some nebulae are a process of giving birth to a new star (stellar nebula).

Shortly after the formation of the nebula, due to its gravity, particles of gas and dust start joining together and gradually grow larger.

As they combine, their gravitational attraction increases and they become so large that due to their own gravity, they collapse in on themselves and create a center that is very hot.

This is how a star is born. The nebula is also called the Pillar of Creation or the Star Nursery.

The name of the nearest nebula to the earth is the Helix Nebula, which is 700 light years away from the earth. Till now about 3000 planetary nebulae are known to exist in our galaxy

The Helix Nebula is the remnant of a Sun-sized star. The Helix Nebula lies in the constellation Aquarius.

Many people think that a black hole can be formed from a nebula, whereas it does not happen.

A black hole is formed only when a star with a mass 20 times that of our Sun dies and explodes (supernova). When a star dies, there is an explosion in it which we call a supernova.

Whereas a nebula can form from any dying star, regardless of its mass.

Nebulae are made up of hydrogen and helium gas while black holes are made up of dark energy.

The largest nebula is the Tarantula Nebula, which extends over a distance of 1800 light years.
