Cyclopam Tablet Uses – Cyclopam is a pain-relieving drug prescribed for abdominal pain, abdominal cramps, pain due to IBS, and menstrual pain.
Cyclopam is a combination of two medicines which contains Dicyclomine (20 mg) and Paracetamol (500 mg).
Cyclopam provides relief from pain by relaxing the smooth muscles in the stomach.
Mode of Action of Cyclopam
Cyclopam contains two medicines Dicyclomine and Paracetamol, both these medicines work in different ways.
Dicyclomine – Dicyclomine is an anti-cholinergic drug that works by relaxing the smooth muscles of our intestines.
Dicyclomine blocks the action of calcium ions in the smooth muscle cells of the stomach and blocks the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.
Because of this the smooth muscles of the stomach are not able to contract and get relaxed.

When the smooth muscles of the stomach are relaxed, we get relief from pain. Dicyclomine also has an analgesic effect.
Paracetamol – It is an antipyretic drug that is used to reduce fever.
It prevents the release of pyrogen by the brain. Due to which the body temperature does not increase.
It also reduces pain. Paracetamol relieves pain by blocking the COX enzyme.
Cyclopam Tablet Uses
Cyclopam is most commonly used for stomach pain. Other uses of Cyclopam are
Preventing stomach pain
Preventing stomach cramps
Reducing the pain in IBS
Preventing pain during periods
Reduce fever
Reducing pain in other parts of the body
Dosage of Cyclopam Tablet
Cyclopam is given in TID dosage in adults i.e. one tablet each in the morning, afternoon, and evening.
Doctors give 2-2 pills in the morning, afternoon, and evening in case of severe stomach pain.
But never take more than 8 tablets of cyclopam in a day.
Children from 6 to 12 years should be given half tablets.
In more severe abdominal pain, the doctor also prescribes 1 tablet in the morning and 1 tablet in the evening.
Cyclopam should not be given to children under 6 years of age.
What Medicines Should not be Taken with Cyclopam
Cyclopam should not be taken with the following medicines
Antacids – Cyclopam should not be taken with antacids as antacids decrease the absorption of Cyclopam.
Because of this Cyclopam is not able to work completely.
Antacid drugs are Aluminum hydroxide, Magnesium carbonate, Magnesium trisilicate, Magnesium hydroxide, Calcium carbonate, Sodium bicarbonate
Anti-Cholinergic – Cyclopam should not be taken with other anti-cholinergic drugs as it may increase the side effects of Cyclopam.
These drugs are Dicyclomine, Atropine, Scopolamine, Oxybutynin, Tolterodine, Solifenacin, Fesoterodine, Benztropine, Trihexyphenidyl, Glycopyrrolate.
CNS Depressants – When Cyclopam is given along with CNS depressants, its side effects increase and the patient may experience symptoms like dizziness, sleepiness, loss of balance, etc.
These drugs are Diazepam, Clonazepam, Alprazolam, Triazolam, Estazolam.
MAO Inhibitors – High blood pressure, fever, nervousness, tremors, etc. can be seen on taking MAO Inhibitor medicines with cyclopam.
MAO inhibitors are Isocarboxazid, Phenelzine, Selegiline, Tranylcypromine, Moclobemide, etc.
Cyclopam Side Effects
Some common side effects of Cyclopam are-
1) Dry mouth
2) Dizziness
3) Blurred vision
4) Feeling sleepy
5) Nausea
6) Being constipated
7) Difficulty in passing urine
8) Headache
Cyclopam may also have some uncommon side effects which should be reported to your doctor like
1) Allergic reaction
2) Swelling in the body
3) Irregular heartbeat
4) Sharp pain in the stomach
5) Difficulty in speaking or swallowing
6) Confusion
Is Cyclopam Safe for Kidney and Liver Patients
Liver and kidney patients should not take Cyclopam without a doctor’s advice.
Because cyclopam is metabolized in the liver and excreted by the kidney.
Therefore, dose adjustment of cyclopam is required in patients with liver and kidney disease.
Can Lactating and Pregnant Women Take Cyclopam
Cyclopam safety is unclear for pregnant women and lactating women, its study is not available.
So pregnant women and lactating women should not take Cyclopam without a doctor’s advice.
