Serratiopeptidase is an enzyme that reduces inflammation and swelling. It is a proteolytic enzyme i.e. an enzyme that breaks down proteins.
It is also called Serrapeptase. It is obtained from a type of gram negative bacteria Serratia marcescens.
This bacteria is found in water, soil, and our environment.

Mode of Action of Serratiopeptidase
Serratiopeptidase works to reduce inflammation and swelling. It reduces inflammation in many ways like
Fibrinolytic Property  – Fibrin is a type of protein due to which blood coagulates.
Whenever we get hurt somewhere, fibrin goes to that place and clot the blood.
Serratiopeptidase works to break down fibrin.
Due to this blood flow can be done easily at the place of injury and swelling can be reduced.
Anti-inflammatory properties  –  Inflammation is a natural reaction of the body when there is an injury or infection in our body.
Serratiopeptidase inhibits the enzymes prostaglandin and bradykinin that cause inflammation.
Because of this inflammation and swelling are reduced.
Mucolytic Properties  – Serratiopeptidase acts to liquefy and break down mucus.
Because of this, the mucus does not accumulate, which especially gives relief in breathing.
It is very useful in lung infections and sinusitis.
Anti edema Properties  – Edema means the accumulation of fluids in any part of the body.
Serratiopeptidase regulates edema proteins and prevents water accumulation in the damaged organ.

Side Effects of Serratiopeptidase Tablet
Serratiopeptidase does not have any major side effects. The research done so far has found only one serious side effect.
This is a very safe medicine. Serratiopeptidase is also safe in liver and kidney patients.
There is no data available for pregnant women and lactating women.
Therefore, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before taking serratiopeptidase.
Dosage of Serratiopeptidase Tablet
The dose of serratiopeptidase depends on what you are giving it for.
In swelling, inflammation, and pain, 15 mg is given in the morning and 15 mg in the evening.
It can be given from a week to 10 days. A maximum dose of 60 mg can be given in a day.
A maximum dose of 60 mg can be given in a day to remove the mucus accumulated in the lungs or to reduce the mucus.
It can be given in one, two, or even three parts. It can be given for four weeks to remove mucus.
In children from 6 to 12 years, it can be given up to 2mg/kg/day.
The maximum dose of serratiopeptidase can be given up to 150 mg a day. Its dosage range depends on the medical condition.
